A South Carolina attorney and ex-mayor of Charleston, S.C., Ernest Hollings chairs the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee. He is a graduate of Citadel and the University of South Carolina. Senator Hollings also serves on Senate Budget and Appropriations Committees.

The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee has jurisdiction over all forms of transportation. It also concerns itself with consumer safety, oceans policy, interstate commerce, communications, science and the management of fisheries and the coastal zone. The most significant legislation ever reported by the Commerce Committee was its deregulation of the transportation industry in the 1980s; lifting government controls on airlines, trucking and railroads.
